Founded in 1973 by Gordon Smith Merchant, with the help of his wife, Billabong was born in Australia, specifically at the Burleigh Heads Beach, Queensland, sunny Gold Coast territory, traditional and mystical place in the world of surfing.
Billabong, moreover, is an Aboriginal word that means oasis.
It was Gordon who started drawing the shorts that later he sold in stores specialized in surfing. He, along with his wife, developed a differentiated way of sewing, making the product more durable and with a great cost-benefit. It didn’t take long untill the brand started being successful, being huge the search for its great quality shorts. Even in the 70s, Gordon founded a factory and the line began to grow. Thus began the sponsorship of Australian athletes. At the turn of the decades, Billabong was already one of the largest in this business industry and its development was linked to the evolution of professional surfing. In the 80s the market expanded and became international with the Billabong being commercialized in the largest markets worldwide, including the United States, Japan, South Africa and Europe.
With the explosion of surfwear market in the 90s, the brand restructures and reaches the skateboarding and snowboarding business, also creating Billabong Girls.
In the year of 2000, Billabong officially becomes public, with shares on the Stock Exchange. The change was decisive, with the acquisition of other brands like Element. Among their sponsored athletes is Derek Rabelo.
